Africa CDC unveils new strategy to strengthen health supply chains across Africa

Share

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) recently gathered in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, bringing together key partners like the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the International Association of Public Health Logisticians. Over six days, they worked together to develop a strategy that addresses the critical need for efficient and reliable health supply chains across Africa.

A central challenge identified during these discussions is the fragmented nature of Africa’s health supply chains. With each country operating under different policies, the movement of medical supplies across borders has been inefficient and often delayed. Africa CDC’s strategy aims to tackle this issue by aligning policies and improving cooperation between governments, regional bodies, and private sector players. This approach is intended to reduce inefficiencies and streamline the process of moving supplies across the continent.

Another key concern is Africa’s heavy reliance on imported medical supplies, which has made the continent vulnerable to global disruptions. To address this, Africa CDC is focusing on increasing local manufacturing capabilities, supporting regional procurement systems, and establishing hubs that will ensure medical supplies are more accessible, affordable, and sustainable. By reducing dependence on external sources, Africa aims to become more resilient in its health logistics.

Technology will also play a critical role in Africa CDC’s plans. The adoption of tools such as blockchain and real-time data systems is intended to improve inventory tracking, forecasting, and decision-making. These digital innovations will help make the supply chain more transparent and efficient, enabling faster responses to emerging health needs.

The strategy also emphasizes the importance of developing local expertise. Africa CDC plans to invest in training programs for local health professionals and establish centres of excellence to ensure long-term progress in public health logistics. Alongside these efforts, sustainability will be a key consideration, with plans to integrate renewable energy sources and reduce waste through more sustainable packaging methods.

Africa CDC’s vision is not only about addressing immediate challenges but also about laying the groundwork for a more resilient health supply chain system. By tackling systemic issues, embracing technological advancements, and promoting sustainability, Africa CDC is positioning itself to lead the transformation of Africa’s health logistics. The goal is a future where medical supplies can reach every community on the continent without delay, improving public health outcomes and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Tesfaye Hailemichael, Senior Procurement Officer at Africa CDC, highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving these goals, stating, “Collaboration is the key to effective supply chains. By aligning efforts across borders and sectors, we can achieve what no single entity can accomplish on its own.” With strong partnerships and a clear strategy, Africa CDC is paving the way for a more efficient and resilient health supply chain system in Africa.
