Rimini, Italy — November 7, 2024 At the Ecomondo event in Rimini, RenOils, a leading consortium in Italy focused on the collection and recycling of used vegetable and animal oils, unveiled an in-depth report on the current and future landscape of used oil management across Europe. The report, titled “Used Vegetable and Animal Oils and Fats: Definition, Regulatory Situation, Physical Properties, Possible Reuses, and Prospects for Energy Recovery,” was developed in collaboration with the University of Rome 3’s Department of Chemistry to address the evolving regulatory and operational environment for used oil recycling.
The study explores the environmental and economic impact of used oils, particularly in light of the European Union’s recent decision to phase out thermal combustion engines by 2035. RenOils, which repurposes used oils predominantly for biodiesel production, expressed concerns over this policy shift, emphasizing that it may inadvertently limit recycling pathways for CO2-neutral oils, posing additional environmental challenges. RenOils President Ennio Fano highlighted the potential consequences: “The EU’s decision to eliminate thermal combustion engines removes a crucial outlet for used oils, which have zero CO2 emissions. Without alternative recycling options, this policy could lead to complex waste management issues for these oils, which otherwise serve as a sustainable biofuel source.”
The report emphasizes the benefits of biofuels derived from used cooking oils, which could play a vital role in reducing the consumption of traditional energy resources and minimizing environmental impact. Biofuels from used oils represent one of the most promising avenues for sustainable energy recovery, as they recycle waste products while contributing to emissions reduction. The report warns, however, that without proper disposal, waste oils can cause significant environmental harm by contaminating sewage systems and soil when improperly discarded.
