Ngonye Falls Hydroelectric Project earns gold certification for sustainability excellence

Share

The Ngonye Falls Hydroelectric Project in Zambia has achieved a prestigious Gold certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS), a global benchmark for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in the hydropower sector.

According to the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the project demonstrated excellence in key areas such as labor and working conditions, governance, and procurement practices. Its approach to communication and consultation stood out as a best practice, involving local communities through collaborative efforts and securing broad stakeholder support. Impressively, the project scored above 60% in advanced requirements across all 12 assessment topics, qualifying it for the Gold certification.

The Ngonye Falls initiative, which will deliver 180 megawatts (MW) of clean energy, is scheduled for completion in 2028.

“Ngonye Falls is a shining example of how benefit-sharing agreements can bring tangible value to local communities,” remarked Joerg Hartmann, an independent consultant and lead assessor for the project. “It also highlights the transformative impact of providing power to a remote and underserved region. While challenges remain, particularly regarding biodiversity, cultural heritage, and aesthetics, the developers have taken a systematic and proactive approach from the beginning.”

The surrounding region, known as one of the poorest areas where a hydropower project has been assessed, stands to gain significantly from the project.

Ngonye Falls is also featured in the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance’s How-to Guide on Hydropower Communications and Consultation. The guide offers practical steps for engaging stakeholders and aligning with HSS principles, underscoring the project’s role as a model for sustainable hydropower development.

About the Hydropower Sustainability Standard

Launched in September 2021 during the International Hydropower Association’s World Hydropower Congress, the Hydropower Sustainability Standard ensures hydropower projects meet stringent ESG performance criteria. Developed by a coalition of industry leaders, governments, multilateral institutions, and civil society organizations, the standard aims to foster trust and transparency in the hydropower sector.

Projects are independently assessed during planning, construction, and operation phases and can earn Silver or Gold certifications based on their performance. To support project assessments, the Hydropower Sustainability ESG Assessment Fund offers grants covering part of the certification costs. Managed by IHA’s non-profit sustainability division and funded by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the fund provides up to CHF 1 million (approximately USD 1.02 million) for over 40 projects over four years.

The Ngonye Falls Hydroelectric Project exemplifies how sustainable hydropower can deliver clean energy while addressing social and environmental challenges, setting a high bar for future developments worldwide.
