AgriSA, a leading advocate for South Africa’s agricultural sector, is set to play a key role in the official launch of the B20 South Africa summit, taking place on 24-25 February in Cape Town. AgriSA’s President, Jaco Minnaar, and CEO, Johann Kotzé, will join influential policymakers and business leaders to discuss pressing economic issues that will shape the country’s future.
With agriculture at the heart of South Africa’s economy, AgriSA sees this summit as a crucial opportunity to champion policies that drive sustainable growth, enhance global trade, and strengthen food security. In the face of evolving global geopolitical and climate challenges, the organization aims to ensure that agriculture remains a priority in discussions on economic resilience and sustainability.

Johann Kotzé emphasized the importance of using the B20 platform to push for meaningful dialogue on three key areas that are critical to the future of South African agriculture:
Sustainable trade practices: Agricultural exports between South Africa and G20 nations account for 55% of total agricultural trade, valued at approximately R134 billion. Kotzé stressed the need to integrate climate adaptation strategies, net-zero transition plans, and sustainability measures into trade agreements. He highlighted that South African farmers already implement responsible farming practices across diverse value chains and must leverage these existing sustainability standards to strengthen their position in global markets. However, transition plans must not come at the expense of the African food system or long-term food security.
Enhanced market access: Expanding global market access is essential for sustaining rural employment and ensuring food system resilience. Addressing non-tariff barriers and enhancing trade protocols—particularly in areas such as animal health management—will be key to unlocking growth opportunities for South African agribusinesses.
Boosting investment confidence: The B20 summit provides a strategic platform to attract investment and drive economic growth in South Africa’s agricultural sector. According to Kotzé, fostering an environment conducive to investment will create opportunities for innovation, job creation, and long-term economic stability.
The B20 South Africa summit is expected to generate impactful policy recommendations, fostering collaboration between businesses, government, and global experts. AgriSA’s active participation underscores its commitment to positioning agriculture as a pillar of sustainable economic development and ensuring that South Africa remains a competitive player in global agribusiness.
