Heed Children’s Warning On Climate Change

Thousands of children across the world skipped school last Friday to protest failure by governments to tackle climate change.

From Nairobi to Johannesburg, Mumbai to New York, children called urgent action to curb global warming.

Last week’s protests came on the heels of a strong hurricane which left Bahamas in ruins. The death toll stands at 52 while 1,300 people are still missing two weeks after hurricane Dorian.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres who visited the country blamed the devastation on global warming and urged world leaders to take greater action to address climate change.

Mr Guterres said climate change has generated ‘turbocharged’ hurricanes and storms, which are occurring with greater intensity and frequency.

Besides that, melting of glaciers, rising sea levels and intense heat waves have also been blamed on climate change.

In Kenya and many parts of Africa, protracted drought spells, which cause deaths and widespread suffering, have become commonplace. Floods also continue to cause misery across the world. All these are caused by mostly by greenhouse gases produced by human activities.

It is these gases that the children want reduced to halt this march to doom. Sadly, some world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, still don’t believe climate change is real, undermining momentum for tackling the global emergency.

But with or without such leaders, the world must take action to avert a climate apocalypse. The time to save the world is now. Tomorrow might be too late. Read more>>
