In a significant step towards strengthening sustainability reporting across the continent, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) Sustainability Centre of Excellence have launched the Sustainability Working Group Africa (SWGA). This initiative is set to play a pivotal role in aligning sustainability efforts across Africa.
The formation of SWGA underscores the growing recognition of sustainability reporting as a critical component of responsible business practices. The group will drive the development of robust reporting frameworks, facilitate knowledge-sharing among professionals, and foster cross-border collaboration to enhance sustainability standards.
A key objective of SWGA is to harmonize sustainability initiatives across different jurisdictions. By engaging key stakeholders, including regulators, development partners, and private sector leaders, the group aims to create a more cohesive approach to sustainability practices. This alignment is expected to strengthen Africa’s sustainable finance strategies, enhance regulatory capacity, and integrate sustainability into financial and policy frameworks.
Led by ACCA and PAFA, SWGA will be supported by an advisory panel of experts, including ACCA members and other sustainability specialists. The panel will analyze jurisdiction-specific case studies and provide recommendations to the Forum for Advancing Sustainability and Integrated Reporting in Africa, an initiative being developed by PAFA. Through this approach, SWGA will ensure that sustainability reporting remains consistent and impactful across the continent.
Jamil Ampomah, Director of ACCA Africa, emphasized the crucial role of accountants in addressing climate change and advancing sustainability. “Collaboration among professionals is key to elevating sustainability reporting. The launch of SWGA is a testament to the power of working together to support Africa’s economic growth through sustainable practices.”
